About Battersea, Clapham Junction, Lavender Hill
Battersea is part of the London Borough of Wandsworth which is south of the Thames, next to Balham, Clapham and Chelsea. Before the Industrial Revolution, much of Battersea was farmland, producing food for the City of London. It was famous for these traits; growing asparagus, pig breeding on Pig Hill (now the site of Shaftesbury Park Estate) and of course, growing lavender on Lavender Hill. Battersea Bridge was created during the Industrial Revolution in 1771. Clapham Junction Station sits in the centre of Battersea, taking its name from a popular village nearby in 1863. Due to the junction and the high volume of railway work that was there, the population expanded rapidly. Some green spaces still remain within the borough, Battersea Park, Clapham Common and Wandsworth Common being the biggest spaces saved. Now, around 2000 trains pass through Clapham Junction Station every day, making it the busiest in Britain and in Europe in terms of train volume. Battersea has a large area of housing estates where The Winstanley Estate is perhaps, the most famous of the estates. Battersea, now known with the nickname Nappy Valley because of the younger families moving here, has many landmarks, to name but a few would be the iconic chimneys of Battersea Power Station (now to be made into houses and an entertainment complex), Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, Battersea Park (home to Go Ape!, Crazy Golf and a small Zoo) and Shaftesbury Park Estate.Lavender Hill is near Clapham Junction in Battersea in the London Borough of Wandsworth.
